I’ve probably said it before, but one of my favorite things about being an Olympic Peninsula photographer is getting to meet and spend time with some incredible people. It never fails to astound me that I’m entrusted with the honor of documenting a couple’s love story through imagery.
The magic of a Northwest Washington sunset is undeniable. And it gets exponentially more incredible the closer you are to the water! Kyla and John joined me in the Sequim Dungeness for a sunset-hour session celebrating their love story. Their connection was absolutely lovely to photograph! Part of my job as a couple’s portrait photographer is to help you relax and feel comfortable in front of my camera. Speaking from my own experience, it can feel strange to have a camera pointed directly at you! With every session, I guide my clients to let their guard down, relax, and have fun with the experience. The biggest compliment I’ve gotten is that my couples have a great time during the session! My goal is for them to focus on each other and their natural interactions. And to laugh together! I’m an adamant believer that everyone is beautiful when they’re laughing!
The Sequim Dungeness is an area on the north coast of the Olympic Peninsula, about 2 1/2 hours away from Seattle by ferry and a long, scenic drive across the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. Home to Dungeness Crab, the historic Irrigation Festival, and more lavender than anywhere in the world outside of France, the Dungeness takes its name from the river that flows across the valley from the glacial snowmeltof the Olympic Mountains to the south. It’s also where I grew up, and there are few places that speak home to me in the same way! We wandered through a gorgeous grassy field before finding our way over to the dramatic bluffs that overlook the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Towards the north, the mountains of Vancouver Island are just barely visible.
As much as I love being an Olympic Peninsula wedding and engagement photographer, I think it’s a shame that many couples wait until a big life event to celebrate their relationship. IMHO, any day is the perfect day to commemorate your story. Being in a relationship is hard work, and I’m a firm believer that it’s important to take regular pauses to reconnect and celebrate your journey together, whether that’s a matter of months or years or decades. You don’t need to be engaged to merit having beautiful portraits together.
Even if your wedding day was long ago, your relationship should be celebrated today, and tomorrow, and every day. Of course, I think portrait photography is a perfect way to do that! (And I think this becomes even more important once you add kids to the picture! I’m a big fan parents taking the time to reconnect and remember the love that sparked their relationship — speaking from my own experience, when your daily life revolves around kids and diapers and school schedules it’s too easy to lose sight of who you are as a couple!)
Whether you plan a couple’s session prior to engagement and a wedding, years into a marriage, or just to capture a season and moment in your relationship, I’d love to be your Olympic Peninsula photographer!
