Fields of pale waving wheat and a winding river, with a row of pale blue mountains in the distance set the stage for a handcrafted backyard farm wedding in northwest Washington’s Skagit Valley. Together with dear friends and family, Kate and Rob created a homespun celebration on a farm where they live just outside of Mt. Vernon, Washington. Kate sewed her own gown from heirloom linens, and the couple grew most of the flowers that were used throughout the decor! Everything that could be was sourced locally or made by hand, down to the couple’s wedding bands that they crafted together with Port Townsend’s With These Rings.
The white peaked tent created a festive atmosphere with long tables laid out family-style underneath, set with blue tablecloths, mix-matched vintage dinnerware, and bright wildflower bouquets. Friends who had traveled from a distance camped out on the property for the weekend, emerging from their tents that morning to the hustle and bustle of a wedding day in full swing. I love the morning preparations on a wedding day, with people coming and going, chairs and tables being set out, the noise of a busy kitchen and a bevvy of friends laughing and chatting as they carry food and floral arrangements and equipment. Like the swirl of an old-fashioned barn dance, everyone has a job and everyone lends a hand bringing the wedding together around a beloved couple.
All the activity on this mild summer day was in honor of Kate and Rob, whose love for each other and effervescent joy were so evident throughout the festivities they couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces! I loved every moment of this wedding, from the song that the bride and groom played together during their ceremony to the sweet toasts from dear friends and family celebrating the couple. And the flowers! If you haven’t guessed, I’m a little bit in love with flowers—and Carra Duggan of Flowers by Carra delivered with romantic, colorful organic bouquets and arrangements. There were even plums in Kate’s stunning bridal bouquet!
