Spring Gardening

Lately I’ve been getting to spend a lot of time in the backyard. Luckily, Joel seems to enjoy it too, and I love getting to spend hours with him digging in the dirt for wormies and rocks. This little corner of our patio was neglected last year, as it spent many months under a huge pile of landscaping dirt! But the infamous dirt pile is finally gone, so I decided to put in some ferns and a pretty hellebore. Eventually it will be shaded by the leaves of our chestnut tree.

Last year my raised beds were too damp—the dirt had so much clay in it that they didn’t drain well. So I’ve been digging in peat in hopes that it will improve drainage!

The Pacific Northwest is a wonderful place to have a garden. Although the last couple summers have been hotter than usual, there are so many plants that love to grow here, and the rain helps to keep everything green most of the year. I spent so much time growing up in my mother’s garden, snacking on veggies, reading, and making flower soup. Did anyone else make flower soup, or was I just a weird kid? Wherever we live I can’t help but try to have something growing—I’ve had very mixed success, but always learn a few tricks for the next place! Something about having some plants in the ground or in pots, whether their edible or ornamental, makes a place feel like home to me. pacific-northwest-backyard-garden0001
