Roche Harbor Resort Wedding

Shay and Jack’s wedding took place in June at Roche Harbor Resort. While the forecast had been calling for an atmospheric river, nevertheless the day dawned bright and sunny! Picturesque puffy white clouds, a brisk breeze, and plenty of sunshine promised a beautiful afternoon.

Nestled at the northern end of San Juan Island in a protected cove, Roche Harbor Resort is a perfect haven for boaters. A quick drive from the Ferry dock in Friday Harbor takes you northwards through pastoral fields and island forests. Past a small airstrip, you’ll arrive at Roche Harbor and see the marina tucked into a cove. The resort consists of several large historic buildings and dozens of charming vacation homes, creating the effect of a village at the water’s edge.

Shay and Jack got ready in two of the hillside townhomes behind the main hotel building. Their first look took place in the sunken garden, surrounded by seasonally blooming annuals and perennials. A first look is the perfect opportunity to take a few minutes to soak in the excitement of seeing one another! Next, we drove down almost to the southernmost point of the island. I had scouted a scenic spot on the bluffs earlier in the day. I wanted to capture the incredible sunlight reflecting off the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the south and the windswept landscape of the island.

After wandering along the little trails on the bluff, we hopped back in the car. I’m so glad Shay and Jack were willing to take an excursion on their wedding day! Despite the forecast, it turned into a spectacular day and I’m so grateful to have had the chance to share the beauty of the island with Shay and Jack. Every time I visit I find new places for scenic portraits!

Roche Harbor Resort Wedding Ceremony and Reception

After returning to Roche Harbor, we gathered the couple’s family and friends for some wedding day portraits in the garden. I love using the gardens for portraits because of their proximity to the ceremony and reception areas. They provide such a lovely backdrop for some of the most important photos of the day.

Next was the big event — the ceremony itself. Shay and Jack were married on the lawn in the gardens in front of the historic Hotel de Haro building. After a beautiful ceremony punctuated by laughter and happy tears, Shay and Jack were pronounced husband and wife! The reception was held in the pavilion up the hill from the gardens. A delicious dinner, heartfelt toasts, and lots of dancing kept everyone engaged late into the evening.
